Along the lines of the thread started by FJK... Can anyone give me a hint on turning 4130 steel? I'm using a plain bearing lathe in good condition. I've been working with 1018 steel and O1 the last few days. After changing to 4130, I simply can't work out a satisfactory finish. The work looks "torn", shows "rings" around the OD. Nowhere close to the finish I was getting on the other material.

Nov 29, 2006 · I looked up some speeds in my handbook and got between 105-270 for sfm based on a BHN of 175-225(I just assumed the lowest). So for spindle speeds I get around 2000 rpm. For feeds I was going to try .005 chip load and run that 1/2" 3flt at 30 ipm. Do you guys think I'm close, or is this to fast or slow. What about the finish parallel?

Feb 06, 2018 · I've never had 41xx (4130, 4140/42, 4145) material heat treated or not, work harden on me while cutting. Probably what is happening is, running too fast surface feet per minute along with too fine of a feed rate, and it's burning up your tool bit, rather it's HSS or carbide. 41xx material in the home shop is not meant to be run fast.
